EXPLORING RUNGUS LONGOI DOT PONGIZAP (COUNTING SONGS) OF SABAH

The Rungus are one of the indigenous Dusunic ethnic groups Sabah, northernmost region Malaysia on Borneo Island. Most people reside in administrative Districts Kudat and Pitas northern Sabah. In culture, many different genres intangible cultural heritage, including traditional secular folk songs, have been passed down orally over generations. An important category longoi tanganak (children’s songs) is dot pongizap (counting songs). author collected 87 from Districts. This paper discusses a detailed study that aimed to (a) document transcribe field recalled by older people, (b) analyse musical characteristics pongizap, provide recommendations for connecting with principles Kodály. research employed ethnographic techniques participant observation, in-depth focus group interviews, as well audio video recording. transcriptions selected songs were then analysed using Kodály Folk Song Analysis. suggests more other Sabah should be collected, documented, introduced public, it will build awareness among ethnicities Malaysia.
